U3A Bridge Club

Bridge is the most popular and challenging card game in the world. The combination of possible hands dealt are almost incalculable.

Playing bridge regular exercises the brain, and could delay the onset of dementia.

Bridge players live longer.

Bridge is fun!

Our sessions take place on Thursdays from 2.30-4pm. The fee is £2 per session - if you would like to know more or would like to join us please contact us.

We aim to maintain an Intermediate Level of (ACOL) bridge. However we shall not be unduly surprised and certainly not aggressively condemnatory if you forget a convention or if you trump your partner’s trick or renege. We pride ourselves in “bucking” the reputation held by outsiders (usually unfairly) that the game is played too seriously.

Week by week we play with different members and each table manages itself. We do not have “A Director”. We score by the Chicago method, but do not worry if you are only familiar with “Rubber Bridge” scoring as you would soon pick it up and there is a traditional and happy ethos within the Group that the enjoyment of the playing is as or more important than the result. While we do not reckon to teach bridge we do believe that we are all learners and the setting is informal so that friendly discussion and analysis of the hands does take place.

I doubt whether a single session goes by when players do not feel that they have learnt something. While we are very interested in each other as bridge players and also as ageing Horsham U3A members, we cannot claim that we have made redundant the various medical and welfare services of the community.

We cannot promise you that you will always be dealt hands full of court cards or that you will always find the perfect partner, but we are sure that the better you get to know the people you are playing with and against the more fun you will get out of this great game and the more progress you will make.
