Communion

10.30am            The 1st Sunday of each month

30. Communion

One of the most powerful ways in which we can express how we belong to one another and to Christ is by sharing Communion together. As the Apostle Paul puts it, ‘The cup of blessing which we bless – is that not sharing together in the blood of Christ? And the bread which we break – is that not sharing together in the Body of Christ? So we who are many are all one body, because we all share in the one bread ‘(1 Corinthians 10:16-17).

This is one way in which we can meaningfully transcend the barriers of face masks and social distancing that keep us apart. In sharing bread and wine we affirm that God has bound us to himself and to each other in an unbreakable covenant, guaranteed by nothing less than the blood of his Son. There is an element of mystery here, but we don’t need to understand it- we just need to come with hearts that are open to the grace of God and that are prepared to trust him.

On a practical note, individual wafers and communion glasses of grape juice minimize any risk of catching or passing on the virus when we celebrate Communion.
